FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Strato Pi design is proprietary and not open-source. Still we are super happy to share the details of the hardware design, so you can appreciate its quality, understand how it works, and learn some tricks in electronic design. The in-depth insets in the product description section of this site offer some behind-the-scene details of the circuit board design. Go to the documentation page to download the full schematic and main board layout documents.
Strato Pi server and Strato Pi server UPS are compliant with the 2014/35/UE (Low Voltage) and 2014/30/UE (EMC) CE directives and the essential CE certification requirements for electromagnetic compatibility (EN61000-6-2), electrical safety (EN60664-1), emission (EN61000-6-3) as well as the RoHS directive for hazardous substances (2011/65/UE). These directives should cover a fair range of professional installations. Strato Pi is not certified and has not been tested for special application environments, like medical and life-support, aerospace, hazardous environments etc.

Sure, you can buy the Strato Pi board, Mini, Base or UPS version and use your own Raspberry Pi Model B version 2 or 3 or even the Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+. Older versions of Raspberry Pi can’t be used with Strato Pi. Because the Strato Pi board sits on top of the Raspberry Pi and is a bit smaller, you should find several third-party cases designed for Raspberry Pi where Strato Pi could fit as well, like the ModMyPi Modular RPi 2 Case. Just remember that our hardware warranty only covers our products as shipped, without modifications. Also take into account that, using Strato Pi and your own Raspberry Pi board and case, the CE compliance we certify on Strato Pi will not automatically apply to your assembled product.

Sure we can! Provided you need a substantial amount of units, usually in excess of a few hundreds, we can quickly design custom devices based on the Strato Pi concept, develop, follow the certification process and mass-produce your product.
Strato Pi has been designed in Italy by Sfera Lab Srl together with Foxel Srl, our manufacturing partner. Foxel is responsible for the assembly and test of all products, at their plant close to Milan, Italy.

Because the Pi 3 lacks the connectors for external radio antennas, these will be surrounded by the metal case of the Strato Pi Touch Display, with a negative impact on the reliability and performance of both radios. Still, they may work for your needs. We use the Raspberry Pi 3 in the Strato Pi Touch Display for the enhanced performance of its CPU, an important plus in GUI applications. The CE certification of Strato Pi Touch Display is performed with both radios disabled.
